Arteon Big Sur Concept: VW’s ‘vinyl’ hope

Big Sur is a stretch of the California coast (and the film of the same name), whose scenic landscapes “inspired” body color. The suspension is lowered by 1.5 inches (38 mm). Added splitter, spoiler and side skirts. Fitted with 20 ” Rotiform TUF-R wheels in high-gloss black design.

The Volkswagen Arteon liftback is in weak demand in the United States even after restyling. For 2020, 3998 units were sold – a minuscule by American standards. In the first quarter of 2021, 1,100 units were sold against 788 a year earlier, and this is an increase of almost 40%. “Concepts” created in partnership with “enthusiasts” are called upon to spur it on. One of them was Arteon Big Sur, in which FMS Automotive and Rotiform Wheels had a hand. It is based on the top-end SEL Premium R-Line with a 2.0 TSI turbo four (272 hp, 350 Nm) and an eight-speed Tiptronic “automatic”, which costs $ 48,585.

“From a distance, it looks like the body is painted, but we wrapped it in green vinyl,” explains FMS’s Gil Placencia. – When pasting, we had to remove all the doors, the hood and spend a good 50-60 hours, but we made sure that everything was perfect. I am proud of the result. ”

Big Sur Concept will not be on sale, but will go on a tour “across the country” along with other cars from the Enthusiast Fleet series. In Europe, Arteon is doing better than in the United States: last year, the owners found 13 582 liftbacks, from January to April 2021, 6123 were sold. For China, the model was renamed Volkswagen CC, but in 2020, 28 428 five-doors were sold and interest melting before our eyes, as evidenced by the sale of 6505 units in four months.
