A week ago, the Aston Martin F1 Team announced it had entered into a long-term strategic partnership with Aramco and rebranded itself as the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team. The 2022 AM22 is being unveiled today at Aston Martin Lagonda’s factory in Gaydon, UK. The car complies with the new technical regulations of the championship, the purpose of which is to make the races more spectacular.
In the 2022 season, the focus is on simplified aerodynamics, so the bulk of the downforce of the car will be generated due to the profiled bottom and the ground effect it creates. The AM22 clearly shows how the shape of the side deflectors and the front wing has changed, which is now devoid of the Y250 swirl generators from the nose. Despite the fact that the pressure is expected to be less, the opponents will be able to move closer to each other.
The estates also affected the wheels. Pirelli tires are now made from a new, more durable compound, so Aston expects more wheel-to-wheel struggles. In addition, flaps have been added to the front, making it harder to get air to the brakes, so as with Oracle Red Bull Racing’s RB18, there’s still a lot of work to be done. Aston Martin says the AM22 will evolve dramatically as testing begins as engineers begin to get real data on how the new elements work.
This month, the presentations of the new cars of most of the teams participating in the Formula 1 championship are scheduled. Cars have already shown Haas and Red Bull. Next in line are AlphaTauri (February 14 at 13:00), Williams Racing (February 15, 15:00), Ferrari (February 17, 15:00), Mercedes-AMG Petronas (February 18), Alpine (February 21) and Alfa Romeo (February 27).
