For quite a long time, Opel has been producing very mediocre models. Until not so long ago, he began to revive the “hot” names of his models. Fans of the brand are looking forward to the hot hatch.
The new Opel Astra, built on a single platform with the Peugeot 308 and other models of the Stellantis corporation, was literally presented for them. Fans of the brand liked the design of the new Astra, and the French platform did not particularly embarrass anyone. And they began to actively dream about the appearance of a “hot hatch”, which could be called the Astra GSi. Since 2017, Opel has begun to revive such historical “nameplates”. The fans dispersed so much that there was even a render of what the “warmed up” Astra GSi could theoretically look like.
However, in addition to the interesting exterior and interior, alas, there is also a small fly in the ointment. The Astra is built on the Peugeot 308 platform, which promises “a variety of petrol and diesel engines ranging from 110 to 225 hp.” And Peugeot has publicly announced that no GTI version is planned. Thus, they refused to compete with hot hatches based on VW Golf, Renault Megane, Ford Focus. The most powerful Peugeot 308 is the 225 hp plug-in hybrid. The likelihood that Opel will try to use or develop a more powerful engine for the sake of a small-scale version is extremely low. Is that the GSi nameplate will receive the Astra with the same plug-in hybrid power plant.
