Back to the future: DeLorean DMC-12 back to the conveyor

Company DeLorean Motor Company alive and well, but machines manufactures since 1983. Its current owner, an American entrepreneur Steve vine, is engaged in repairing and restoration of the survivors compartment DMC-12, but there are plans to resume production of this iconic model, which requires some adjustments in American law. If officials will not fail, the new DeLorean DMC-12 will be released in 2021.

About his plans to revive the production DMC-12 DeLorean, the company said in early 2016, after the U.S. Congress passed a special law for small manufacturers (Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act) that will significantly simplify the certification of their products: conduct crash tests, in particular, is not required, however, to comply with environmental regulations necessary. That is why DeLorean said that the resumption of the production DMC-12 she will first need a new, modern engine with capacity 350-400 HP instead of the original archaic Swedish-French V6, which has issued a total of 130 “horses” and with difficulty dispersed the cherished car to 88 mph in the cult film Back to the future.

Transmission, brakes, some suspension components, interior details and lighting will also be new, but the overall body of the DMC-12 will retain the original look – it will do it out of spare parts left over from the days of John Zachary DeLorean. About the founder of the company, by the way, after 2016 had to remove two of the film: art Driven (in then hire known as the “million dollar Car”) and the documentary Framing John DeLorean, which DeLorean was played by Alec Baldwin. But the new DMC-12 the light has not yet seen…

The fact that the National safety management (NHTSA) and did not bother to implement the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act, dealing instead with drones and many revocable campaigns (only pillows Takata permanently dislodged officials of the gauge). Last fall’s SEMA (manufacturers Association for more oborudovana), which is also strongly interested in Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of transportation (NHTSA obey him), because it hinders implementation of the law, and as a result, officials began to fuss. Now Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act that called put into production – must pass all circles of the American bureaucratic hell (discussion, approval of the various committees, developing secondary legislation), and if all goes without delay, about six months later, the law is working, and the DeLorean Motor Company will be able to proceed with the preparation for manufacturing new DMC-12, which also takes time. In General, before 2021 do not wait.

According to the law, short-run manufacturers will be able to produce not more than 5000 machines, and circulation of each model should not exceed 325 pieces. For DeLorean Motor Company that’s more than enough: it plans to issue no more than 300 cars worth 100 thousand dollars each.

What happens when spare parts for the original DMC-12 end? So far the company didn’t make a DeLorean, but it is possible that later will release a new model “based on” or in the form of so-called Thrifty restating, which is becoming more popular on both sides of the ocean.

Flying DeLorean, which is a dream of fans of the second part of the movie “Back to the future”, will also! In 2012, Paul DeLorean, grandson of Zechariah of John DeLorean, DeLorean established a startup Aerospace, which is developing electric aerocar, but, as they say, is another story.
