Hyundai has officially unveiled the new Bayon compact crossover, which should be the most affordable SUV in the South Korean brand’s lineup on the European market. The start of car sales is scheduled for the summer of 2021.
The length of the car was 4.18 meters, and the size of the wheelbase is 2.58 m. The volume of the luggage compartment was 411 liters, and with the rear row seats folded, the free space increases to 1205 liters.
At the heart of the Hyundai Bayon is the platform of the compact i20 hatchback, with which the crossover shared the engine lineup. The base engine was a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated gasoline unit with a capacity of 85 liters. with., acting in conjunction with a five-speed manual transmission.
One step higher is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder 100-horsepower turbo engine, working together with a six-speed “mechanics” or a seven-speed “robot” with two clutches. In addition, a more powerful 120-horsepower version of this engine is available, operating in a “mild hybrid” scheme. All versions have front-wheel drive only.
In the appearance of Hyundai Bayon, one can guess the similarity with the fourth generation Tucson crossover, with which the novelty is related by the shape of the radiator grille and front optics with boomerang-shaped blocks of LED running lights. The interior solutions were borrowed from the soplatform i20: for the top versions of Bayon there is a 10.25-inch virtual instrument panel and a multimedia touchscreen display of the same diagonal.
For the first time, the new Hyundai compact crossover became known in November 2020. The name of the model is derived from the city of Bayonne in the south-west of France. The location on the Atlantic coast is popular with outdoor enthusiasts, which “fits the character of the new model”.
Pricing for the Hyundai Bayon, which will compete in Europe with the Ford EcoSport, Fiat Panda City Cross, and the new Dacia Sandero Stepway, has yet to be announced.
