After a test drive of the Mercedes W206, we were impressed by how well it balanced the characteristics of the chassis and steering. But still it is worth noting that the W206 is sharpened more for comfort. But BMW brand cars have always been famous for their sportiness. Today we will test the BMW 3 G20 and try to find the answer to the question: what can its eternal direct competitor oppose Mercedes?

BMW 340i G20 engine

We are testing a BMW 340i today, under the hood there is an inline 6-cylinder 3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine V58B30o1. This engine is a new generation, it is faster“ “smarter” and more technologically advanced than its predecessor. The power of this power unit is 374 hp and a torque of 500 Nm. The engine is located longitudinally, the drive is on the rear wheels, but in certain situations, the front drive is also connected through the clutch.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km. the BMW 340i G20 according to our measurements was 4.4 s., this is a very good result and it coincides with the characteristics stated by the manufacturer. The reaction to pressing the gas pedal is instantaneous, gear shifting happens quickly with small jerks.

The consumption in urban mode was 11 liters per 100 km, which is an excellent result considering the engine capacity.

After impressive acceleration figures, we decided to stop by a specialized service center to measure power and torque — here the Bavarians exceeded all our expectations: the power was 412 hp, and the torque was 559 Nm.

The ZF reinforced hydromechanical automatic works in tandem with the engine and there is an electronically controlled differential with an actuator on the rear axle“ which “decides” when to close the differential and when to open it.

We also want to note the exhaust on the BMW 340i G20 — not very loud, not very quiet, but at the same time it is “alive”, and not from the speakers, it sounds low, menacing and truthful.

Suspension and steering BMW G20

The BMW 340i G20 has an M-suspension and it is uncompromising – rigid even in comfort mode, completely repeats the profile of the road and it “doesn’t care” that you may not be comfortable, plus its work is clearly audible in the cabin.

The steering is just perfect, the reactions are absolutely clear and transparent. BMW G20 is very well controlled, it is a very obedient and mobile car, a little difficult to perceive, but giving such emotions that we were ready to forgive him all the shortcomings.

BMW 3 G20 Interior

The BMW 3 G20 interior follows the traditions of the brand and retains brand recognition: the same shapes, the same groupings of blocks, the same tunnel, the arrangement of elements, the armrest. Yes, the materials and design are different, but the “meaning” remains the same. The Bavarians do not follow the trends and put a lot of hard buttons and twirlers, but it’s not modern, but this is exactly how BMW fans want.

The driver’s seat in the BMW G20 is very ergonomic, all the elements are exactly where you expect to find them. The front seats are sporty with pronounced lateral support, they hold securely during drifting and passing sharp turns.

But there is very little space in the back row, plus the central tunnel interferes.

BMW 3 G20 interior materials, fitting parts, assembly at the highest level, there are no squeaks completely, here Mercedes W206 noticeably loses.

BMW G20 did not please us with good noise insulation, the only thing we can recommend to its future owners is to do additional noise insulation of the interior.

Well, at the end of our test drive, we measured the deceleration from 100 to 0 km/h and it took 36m. and 2.6 sec. – this is an excellent result, in principle, what else could you expect from M-brakes.

In conclusion, we want to say that the BMW 3 G20 turned out to be a car that fully complies with all the traditions of the BMW brand, with its advantages and disadvantages, but with the same huge charisma that wins the hearts of millions of fans around the world.
