British scientists: drink water, otherwise you are as drunk!

A study by British scientists has shown that driving in a dehydrated state can be as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol. Lack of fluid leads to loss of concentration and potentially dangerous errors.

Leasing Options drew attention to the problem of dehydration among drivers. She cites the results of a study by Loughborough University, which states: “Moderate hypohydration (dehydration) leads to a significant increase in the number of small errors during prolonged monotonous driving compared to performing the same tasks in a hydrated state.”

According to scientists, the magnitude of the decrease in attention is similar to that observed during intoxication with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or with lack of sleep. These findings are corroborated by Jacob Hatch, founder of Hydration Anywhere, who stated in a recent article that 1.5% water loss leads to impaired performance on tasks that require concentration, coordination, and quick decision-making.

“Loss of concentration is the main cause of tragedy in areas requiring increased attention,” he added.

Here are some of the symptoms of dehydration. They can greatly affect your ability to drive:

  • tiredness
  • dizziness and / or nausea
  • muscle spasms
  • loss of attention / concentration
  • headaches

To prevent disorientation, experts recommend monitoring the maintenance of water balance, that is, taking more fluid than the body loses. If you have to travel long distances in hot weather, make sure you have enough water in your car and plan several stops ahead of your trip. This tactic will help you stay focused while driving and avoid common driver mistakes, which account for 94% of car accidents.
