BMW is forced to recall its flagship X7 crossover due to cup holders malfunction. The company is being sued for $ 5 million.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine Auto with reference to The Guardian.
The plaintiff, BrightK Consulting, claims that the cup holders are unable to contain even a small amount of spilled liquid. When tea, coffee, or juice is spilled into the cup holder, the liquid may leak and enter the airbag control module located under the dashboard. Oxidation of the contacts may cause the airbags to deploy spontaneously.
This lawsuit concerns all X7 crossovers ever released. The car directly related to the lawsuit was bought new in December 2019. In July 2021, a warning about defective airbags appeared in the car for the first time.
The company that sued the German automaker has evidence that BMW knew about the problem earlier due to several similar complaints. BMW has not yet commented on the current situation. But the company will probably soon be forced to recall several tens of thousands of crossovers and fix the problem.
