Clarkson, Hammond and May shut down DriveTribe

DriveTribe social network has been working for almost seven years. According to the official version, it is being closed due to a drop in revenues amid cut advertising budgets for automakers. Unofficially, the project turned out to be very expensive to launch, and then brought in losses.

DriveTribe was founded in 2015 after TV presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May left the BBC TopGear show. The site and the app are a club of interests in the automotive and near-automotive fields. Clarkson, Hammond, and May own it, but other people are in charge of the operations and technical issues. The food social network FoodTribe operates on the same platform.

“For many months we have been confronted with serious industry problems, which, unfortunately, will not go anywhere. The long-term global shortage of computer chips has caused a number of problems for the auto industry and led to severe cuts in marketing budgets in the industry. This has created an incredibly challenging operating environment for companies like ours that rely on advertising. Therefore, unfortunately, we will close the DriveTribe and FoodTribe sites and apps, as well as the business behind them, at the end of this month, ”the British trio said in a statement.

Richard Hammond will keep the DriveTribe community alive through “regular” social media channels that will continue after the site and app are closed. There he will share information about his new projects, including the Smallest Cog Workshop. Clarkson and May, in turn, will support a colleague and occasionally appear in his videos.

Drive notes: According to insiders, the DriveTribe and FoodTribe projects “burned” millions of dollars in creating websites and applications, while they were mainly funded by the hosts’ own funds. And the fall in advertising revenue during the coronavirus pandemic finally “finished off” the social network.
