BMW must be in the final stages of producing an M4 convertible because there was almost no camouflage on the prototype seen by the spy photos.

In fact, the masking film covering only the rear bumper, the lower half of the trunk lid and part of the rear fenders is not really hiding anything that we haven’t seen before. In terms of paint, this piece is painted Isle of Man Green, the starting color for the mechanically linked BMW M3 Sedan.

Aside from the highly controversial “XXL” front grille, there are other major changes coming to the M4. Like the regular 4-Series convertible that debuted last September, the top version will ditch the metal roof in favor of a lighter, more compact fabric upper. It is black on this prototype, but there is a possibility that BMW will offer at least one or two additional shades of this element for the production model.

While Mercedes has decided to cut its convertible lineup to the exclusion of the C-Class, BMW obviously sees things differently as it not only updates the 4-Series with a retractable roof, but also adds a high-performance version to the lineup. M, which in theory should be even better, thanks to a lower center of gravity and a lighter roof. It is not yet known whether the convertible will receive rear- and all-wheel drive versions, as well as a 6-speed manual transmission.

According to the PR-manager of the Bavarian company, the new BMW M4 convertible will be launched “by the beginning of the warm season.” As for another M vehicle yet to be revealed, the M3 Touring won’t hit the market until 2022. According to preliminary information, he will also receive an overall radiator grill, despite the fact that it has been criticized more than once in the past few months. Fortunately, this design will not be used in all BMW models.
