Toyota is developing a sports version of the Corolla hatchback, which will be named the traditional prefix GR (Gazoo Racing). According to the Japanese publication Car Sensor, such a modification of the car will be equipped with a 300 horsepower engine.
We are talking about a modernized 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo engine, which is currently equipped with the Toyota Yaris GR hatchback. It develops 260 hp on it, however, as expected, in the case of the larger Corolla GR, the output of the unit will increase by another 40 horsepower.
The engine will work in conjunction with a six-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drive. In addition, the Toyota Corolla GR will receive Torsen differentials on the front and rear axles, upgraded suspension and steering with sporty settings, and an aerodynamic body kit.
According to preliminary data, the premiere of such a car will take place in 2022. Toyota Corolla GR will be able to compete with sports hatchbacks like Honda Civic Type R, Renault Megane R.S Trophy and Hyundai i30 N.
As for the Toyota Yaris GR, the model debuted in early 2020. The hatchback was equipped with the world’s most powerful serial three-cylinder engine: a 1.6-liter supercharged “three”, producing 260 hp. from. and 360 Nm of torque.
The car is capable of gaining the first “hundred” in about 5.5 seconds, and the maximum speed is electronically limited to 230 km per hour. The driver can choose from three driving modes: Normal, Sport and Track. In standard driving, traction is distributed in a ratio of 60:40 in favor of the rear axle, and in sports driving – 30:70. Finally, in Track mode, torque is transmitted equally to each axle.
