The ambition of this crossover is simply off the scale, with its characteristics it is ready to compete with such monsters as VW Golf R, Porsche Macan, as well as with the corresponding BMW, Mercedes and Audi models, but with all this, it feels great both on the track and in the city stream. A bold statement? And that’s what we’re going to check. Today we have a Cupra Formentor test drive.

Cupra Racing was a division of the Spanish car manufacturer Seat, which in turn has been in the shadow of its older brother Volkswagen for a long time, but in 2018. VAG decided to give the Spaniards a chance to show themselves, and a separate special brand Cupra was born.

Cupra Formentor is the first crossover built on the MQB Evo platform, that is, all the best that VAG was capable of in the form factor of a crossover with a transverse engine arrangement is here.

Appearance of Cupra Formentor

Externally, the Cupra Formentor 2021 is similar to the Seat Leon, but its appearance is rethought and more harmonious. The rear part of the car is more “chopped” and therefore the combination of all facets of the body turned out to be more organic.

If we compare the Cupra Formentor with the VW Tiguan, it turns out that they are the same width, but the Formentor is shorter by 50 mm. and lower by 140 mm. The clearance is 150 mm.

But the most important thing is that the Cupra Formentor is inside – it is a VW Golf R of the 8th generation only in the crossover body. This is the same 2.0TSI engine with a capacity of 310hp, a DQ381 robotic gearbox and all-wheel drive implemented using a 6th generation Haldex clutch.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h turned out to be only 5 seconds. – excellent result.

The average fuel consumption in the urban cycle was 12 liters., well, in another way, I constantly want to press the gas pedal.

VAG believes that the Cupra Formentor 2021 is technically perfect, but at the same time it is stylish, brutal, bright, something even resembles a simplified version Lamborghini Urus.

The exhaust of the Formentor deserves special attention: although it is not real, it sounds very good, it seems that there is not an inline four under the hood, but at least a V8.

Suspension, chassis and brakes Cupra Formentor

The suspension of the Cupra Formentor is adaptive, the shock absorbers are able to change the stiffness, but this, unfortunately, does not save the situation: all the irregularities of the road are felt very well and over time it becomes clear that the car is still sharpened more for sports than for comfortable urban driving.

The handling of the Cupra Formentor 2021, thanks to the correct weight distribution on the axes, is simply excellent, keeps the road confidently, rolls are minimal in turns, and the behavior of the car is predictable when driving actively.

The Cupra Formentor brakes are also in full order — slowing down from 100 to 0 km/ h took us 37 m., this is a very good result, but for those who do not have enough, they can order a Brembo brake system for an additional fee.

Cupra Formentor Interior 2021

The interior of the Cupra Formentor 2021 is no different from the interior of the latest Seat Leon: here, as well as in any car of the VAG concern of the same level, it is just normal and the quality of the finish is not particularly impressive. The ergonomics of the driver’s seat is good, all the main controls are within reach of the driver’s outstretched hand.

The front seats in the Cupra Formentor are very good, sporty “buckets” with pronounced lateral support, moderately rigid and very comfortable.

The steering wheel looks great, the execution, the physical buttons and the perforation deserve special thanks.

The new multimedia system in Formentor is relatively convenient, but you need to get used to it, the algorithms are such that you need to do a few clicks, going down the menu and nothing is available immediately. There are also periodic suspensions, and the quality of the rear-view camera could be better.

There is enough space on the back row of seats for both legs and head, the trunk is also quite spacious – 450 liters.

But I would like to have better sound insulation, we can’t say that it is completely bad, but in our opinion it is not sufficient.

Cupra Formentor is an absolutely very interesting car, it is absolutely not perfect, but it is alive, there are very few such cars now, it will definitely not be a hit of sales, but to those few motorists who buy it, it will give a lot of vivid impressions and drive.
