Tesla will begin European sales of the relatively affordable Model 2 electric car in 2023. The car, which will be the cheapest in the lineup of the American brand, will compete with the Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen ID.3 and KIA Niro. Reported by Autocar.
According to preliminary data, prices for the new product will start from 23 thousand euros. Thus, the novelty will turn out to be half the price of the current most affordable Model 3 model, prices for which in Europe start at 47 thousand euros.
The head of Tesla, Elon Musk, has repeatedly said that the company needs a relatively cheap electric car, but before the launch of such a car was impossible due to the high cost of batteries. Over the 13 years of its existence, Tesla has been able to reduce the cost of producing batteries by about 50%, while their capacity has increased several times.
The Tesla Model 2 is expected to be a compact hatchback, available with a range of battery capacities, allowing for 200 to 450 kilometers of travel on a single charge.
Earlier, Musk said that he was going to develop two different versions of the new model: one for the European and the other for the Chinese market. The cars will be produced both at the Tesla plant in Shanghai, and at the new European “Gigafactory”, which is now being built in Berlin. Musk said that each of the factories will assemble “original cars” that will be different from each other.
