Production of the BMW M2 series F87 coupe will be discontinued this summer, but there will be a significant pause before the next generation is released: the successor with the G87 index will appear in 2023.
According to the BMW Blog, citing its own sources in the Bavarian brand, the new generation BMW 2-Series coupe will debut this year, but its high-performance version of the M2 will appear much later. Despite the fact that the current generation model with the F87 index will cease production in the coming summer, production of the successor to the G87 series will not start until December 2022. The first cars will appear on the roads only in 2023. It is known that the new M2 will remain a rear-wheel drive car, unlike other “twos” – the compact MPV Active Tourer and the Gran Coupe sedan. A manual transmission is still questionable, even as an option.
Most likely, the coupe will receive a traditional 8-speed “automatic” ZF and an inline 3.0-liter “six” S58 with biturbocharging, familiar from the models M3 / M4 and X3 / X4 M. Its power, according to insiders , will be 400-450 horsepower. And the new generation M2 will also avoid the appearance of giant radiator grilles in the style of the current BMW Quartet. The M3 and M4 models are also offered with all-wheel drive – acceleration from standstill to 100 kilometers per hour for such versions is reduced by 0.4 seconds and takes only 3.5 seconds. Top speed has not changed: the sedan and coupe accelerate to 250 kilometers per hour or 290 kilometers per hour with the optional M Performance Package.
