Faster, more economical, long-range, cheaper! Canadians have developed a transmission for electric cars

Canadian company Inmotive has announced the development of a two-speed transmission for all-electric vehicles.

The new two-speed transmission for electric cars is called Ingear. Most electric cars today do not have a gearbox in the usual sense: with several steps. However, Canadian experts are sure: this does not mean that they should function only according to this scheme. Moreover, there are exceptions to these rules. Two-speed transmissions are found on the production Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT models.

Traditionally, electric cars have two gearboxes between the motor and the wheels. The new Ingear transmission replaces the second gearbox. In the box, the chain continuously transmits the moment, but depending on the load it interacts with a sprocket of large or small diameter.

The authors of the Ingear project are confident that the autonomy of an electric vehicle on a single charge will increase by 7-15%, the acceleration dynamics will increase by at least 15%, and the increase in cost compared to a conventional design for an average car will be less than $ 150. In addition, the Ingear transmission is suitable for all vehicle classes.
