Ford Mach-E – a new sports car or the end of an era

First, a little history, the Ford Mustang is an iconic car that every car owner wanted to have. Initially, it was produced as a regular coupe and there was no question of any sport, the emphasis was on comfort, economy and ease of maintenance. But with the growth of sales, more powerful versions began to appear and later the Ford Mustang began to be considered a sports car for the poor. As the years passed, the generations of the Ford Mustang changed, the volume and power of the engines increased, and in the end the car became a favorite of car owners, and was also recognized as a real sports car despite some rather outdated technical solutions.

And now it’s 2021 and we have a Mustang Mach-E electric car on a test drive. The body design has changed a lot, but the designers still managed to preserve some hereditary features. The rear optics are very similar to the previous models, the front is more a tribute to modern fashion. But the “radiator grille” is the preservation of “family values”. But in all other respects, this is a completely new car and the most important innovation is that it has become a 4-door.

There are no door handles, and in order to open the door, you need to press the button that is located on the same door.

And now it’s time to check the dynamic characteristics of the Ford Mach-E.

Our test instance is equipped with an 88 kWh battery and it should be enough for 540 km of mileage. According to the results of our tests, we got about 480 km.
The car’s power is 351 hp, the torque is 580 Nm. The transmission is all-wheel drive. The claimed acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is 4.8 seconds. Very good, let’s check it out.
Unfortunately, no matter how we tried, we failed to accelerate the Ford Mustang Mach-E from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5.7 seconds.

The interior of the Mach-E is quite spacious, made of high-quality materials, soft and pleasant to the touch, there are no creaks and vibrations. The front seats are very ergonomic with good lateral support. There is enough space for the rear passengers, but it cannot be said that there is a lot, something reminiscent of the rear row of seats of the Tesla Model Y.
The trunk is not very large — only 402 liters.

Visibility in the rear-view mirror is bad — well, what did you want, it’s still a Ford Mustang.

The dashboard of the Mustang Mach-E is small and nondescript, but with good image quality. But what deserves special attention is a huge 15-inch central display, like a Tesla. With it, you can control all the functions of the car. Everything works smoothly and quickly. The only thing that puzzled us was the mechanical volume control washer built right into the screen. Why the designers did this remains a mystery to us.

I also really liked the sound of the Bang & Olusfen premium audio system and noise insulation.

Suspension and steering Mach-E

The suspension of the Ford Mach-E, as expected, is quite rigid, all the irregularities are immediately felt by the spine, very mixed feelings… Configuration with adaptive shock absorbers is not provided.

But what we definitely did not expect from the Ford Mustang Mach-E is the lack of sports steering. In terms of handling, this is an ordinary average car without pronounced pros and cons. The eversion of the steering wheel from stop to stop is 2.7 turns — there is no smell of sports sharpness here.

Based on all of the above, the conclusion suggests itself: the Mach-E is an excellent modern electric family SUV, but, unfortunately, it has lost almost everything that made this model so popular.
