G-class will turn into an E-G

In the database of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), mentions of the electric performance of the legendary German SUV Mercedes-Benz G-class were recently discovered. The trademarks EQG 580 and EQG 560 have been registered.

In a few days, the official presentation of the flagship electric vehicle Mercedes-Benz EQS will take place. It is the automaker’s first model based on a modular architecture that was created exclusively for luxury and executive electric vehicles. Suffice it to say that the German automaker is at full throttle when it comes to increasing the number of its models from the electric EQ family. An electric version of the legendary Mercedes G-Class SUV will soon join them.

It turns out that the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) recently registered the names EQG 580 and EQG 560.

The documents for these trademarks were submitted by the German concern Daimler AG, which includes the premium brand Mercedes. All necessary papers were submitted on April 1, 2021. The names referred to automobiles and their parts, in particular, electric vehicles. At the moment, the status of both applications is listed as: “Application under consideration”.

Notably, the acronym EQG was actually registered by Daimler AG back in 2016, which should mean a possible nickname for the electric version of the Mercedes G-Class.

Reports of the upcoming electric G-Class surfaced way back in 2019, when Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius confirmed it in a tweet from Sasha Pallenberg, head of digital transformation at Daimler. Then, in October 2020, Mercedes-Benz confirmed the news by releasing the company’s official plan that electrified vehicles will account for more than half of its global sales by 2030.

Details of the upcoming electric G-Class, or EQG, as we should start calling it, are scarce at the moment. The timing is also unclear, although we expect the hardcore G-Class 4×4 Squared to arrive first by early 2022.
