GM for the first time in 90 years lost the title of the main manufacturer of the United States


General Motors at the end of last year reduced the volume of car production and, for the first time in many years, was in second place in terms of the volume of cars sold in the United States. According to the Wall Street Journal, the first place was taken by the Toyota brand, on whose indicators the crisis of microelectronic components was not so significantly affected.

Over the past year, Toyota sold about 2.3 million vehicles in the United States, which is 10% more than in 2020. At the same time, GM lowered its results by 13% – to 2.2 million cars. Thus, Toyota bypassed its competitor by 114 thousand cars sold in 2021. It is noteworthy that both automakers showed a sharp decline in sales in the fourth quarter, but while Toyota had 30%, GM had 43%.

The management of the General Motors concern explains this situation by the “unprecedented coincidence of circumstances” that developed last year, the main of which was the global shortage of microelectronics. However, in the coming 2022, the automaker intends to regain leadership: hopes are associated with a gradual restoration of supply chains, as well as plans to bring several new products to the car market at once. Among them will be both electric cars and new pickup models – in this segment GM’s positions are traditionally strong.

The publication also notes that in addition to Toyota, other manufacturers were able to increase their share in the US car market. These are, for example, Mazda, VW, BMW and Hyundai: the Korean company was able to sell a record 738 thousand cars on the local market, which is 19% more than in 2020.
