The car will appear no earlier than 2025
General Motors has decided to turn the Chevrolet Corvette into a separate sub-brand, releasing a line of sports electric vehicles under this name, Bloomberg reports, citing anonymous sources in the company’s management.
The first model of the Corvette brand will be an electric crossover. This car will emphasize its sporty character and corresponding dynamic characteristics. However, it will appear only in 2025, and maybe later. In General, according to sources, GM has been thinking about expanding the Corvette model range for the last 20 years, but the final decision has been made only now.
GM’s plan appears to be a response to Ford’s management’s decision to release its electric crossover under the Mustang Mach E name, thus moving the Mustang name into a separate sub-brand. Interestingly, initially Ford was just preparing an electric crossover, and the decision to make it look like a Mustang sports car was made after the management saw the first prototype, the appearance of which was considered too faceless there.
Another example of this policy is the Hummer electric pickup truck. GM also initially developed just an electric pickup truck, and only at the last moment it was decided to give it a stylistic resemblance to the legendary army SUVs.
