Fiat Chrysler Automobiles calls a Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat the most powerful production SUV in the world.
The current Dodge Durango third generation is the closest technical relative of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and with periodic updates produced since 2010. Popular Durango is far behind the Grand Cherokee, which last year became the leader of the U.S. midsize SUV segment: according to the resource CarSalesBase sold 67 599 242 969 respectively. Another thing is that the demand for the Durango remained stable for the past seven years he has not changed, and the model continues to regularly bring money in cash FCA.
Dedicated to 2021 model update is the most significant part of the interior since its debut: crossover (unlike the Grand Cherokee had no underdrive, so that it is a crossover, not a SUV) received a completely new front panel with a horizontally oriented 10.1-inch touch screen multimedia system, Uconnect 5 and the new larger unit climate control. The design of the Central tunnel with the selector lever also has changed: to the right, a high wall, visually creating around the driver separate space. Outside of the updated Durango is easiest to recognize in the flattened bottom of the false radiator grille in the style of the models of cars Dodge, more prominent front bumper with boomerangers side slits and new led headlights.
The main technical innovation – a long-awaited version with the compressor SRT Hellcat 6.2-liter HEMI V8, which the FCA seems to be already instilled in all of its iconic models in the Durango. The last doesn’t mean worst: under the hood of a Durango SRT Hellcat legendary engine produces a maximum of 720 HP and 875 Nm. At the close ideological Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk peak power less than 3 HP symbolic, and therefore the FCA calls it Durango SRT Hellcat the most powerful production SUV in the world.
Whether such a statement? If we talk about stock, tailor-made from scratch machines, then Yes – behind the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne in the top of modifications. But here, for example, the famous Studio Hennessey Performance, having the status of a carmaker in 2018, has rolled out the Jeep Trackhawk HPE1200 with the motor in 1217 HP and is already offering upgrades for the Durango SRT Hellcat – first “only” up to 1026 HP, and then we’ll see.
But the stock Durango SRT Hellcat are good because they are covered by a full factory warranty, and it can be operated in the tail and mane – all components have a large enough resource, hence the forged crankshaft with reinforced damper, forged pistons, improved cooling and lubrication, modified cylinder head, valves and more. How much power consume of 2.38-liter “chopper” with an intercooler, we can only guess. The fuel consumption of the manufacturer is also tactfully not advertise. But it is known that up to 60 mph (96,56 km/h) Durango SRT Hellcat accelerates in 2.5 seconds, quarter mile passes in 11.5 sec, top speed – 290 km/h.
Transmission – only 8-speed hydromechanical “automatic” TorqueFlite 8HP95 with the sport mode and the mode of towing: the “charged” SUV able to haul a trailer weight 3946 kg – best performance in the class. The suspension had to do it rough, with the aim of track riding. Brakes from Brembo: front ventilated discs with a diameter of 15.75 inches with 6-piston calipers, rear – and 13.8-inch with 4-piston calipers. Tires – Pirelli Scorpion Zero or Pirelli P-Zero dimension 295/45 ZR 20.
To purchase a Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat will be available only at the beginning of next year, and the price is not yet announced, but the updated crossover with other motors will be available this summer: will be offered a choice of atmospheric 6.2-liter V8 HEMI (482 HP, 637 Nm), the youngest 5.7-liter V8 HEMI (365 HP, 529 Nm) and a base 3.6-litre V6 Pentastar (299 HP, 353 Nm).
This update to the Durango will probably be the last: SUV fourth generation Italian Giorgio platform is expected no later than 2022.
