American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Inc. In August, sold 44,264 vehicles made in China, including 31,379 vehicles for export, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) said. Local sales of Chinese-made vehicles jumped to 12,885 vehicles last month from 8,621 vehicles in July.
It is noted that Tesla sales in the first month of each quarter are generally lower than in the next two months.
The company, which manufactures Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers in Shanghai, sold 32,968 Chinese-made vehicles in July and 33,155 units in June. Tesla unveiled a cheaper version of the Model Y in China in July. The starting price of Model 3 sedans was also cut. The automaker faced increasing competition from local automakers.
China’s BYD sold 60,858 electric vehicles last month, and a joint venture between General Motors and SAIC Motor in China delivered 43,783 units.
CPCA reported that passenger car sales in China totaled 1.5 million vehicles in August, down 14.7% from a year earlier.
