Toyota already sells plug-in hybrid models in Europe, including the Japanese-made RAV 4 SUV. Toyota Europe CEO Matt Harrison said the automaker plans to add plug-in variants to its core models and localize production. However, Harrison did not reveal which Toyota vehicles will receive hybrid versions and where they will be built.
Plants in the UK and Turkey are likely to be their first European plants to produce plug-in hybrids.
Toyota expects plug-in hybrids to account for 10 percent of its European sales by 2025. It already sells plug-in hybrid versions of the RAV4 SUV and Prius in Europe. Both are built in Japan. Harrison said Toyota is likely to build an electric car in Europe sometime after 2025, when it expects more than 10% of its European sales to be fully electric cars.
