Hyundai has launched a robotic taxi based on the Ioniq 5 model in partnership with Motional, an autonomous technology company. This is not just a concept car: it should be operational in a few years.
Note that Hyundai Ioniq 5 has the 4th level of autonomy: this means that the car can move completely independently, without external control. The robotaxi was equipped with a large number of sensors: more than thirty radars, lidars, and cameras that make it possible to identify a car without a person.
It is reported that the robotaxi was originally created as a drone, into which the vast experience and developments of the Motional brand, collected over decades, were invested. We are talking about thousands of passengers in the Lyft network in Las Vegas, which is home to the largest fleet of self-driving taxis in the world.
In this case, each Hyundai Ioniq 5 robotaxi will be under control, and the operator, in the event of an emergency situation, has the opportunity to connect to the control and direct the car along a new route. Motional will begin using Ioniq 5-based robotic taxis in 2023.
