Korean manufacturers have achieved incredible success not only in electronics, but also in the automotive industry, they still do not stop improving their products and try to surprise customers with their new products. And here is another novelty — Hyundai Staria: huge glasses, simple but clear lines, while it looks futuristic, powerful and fresh. As the Koreans themselves say, this is a premium minivan, whether it will be able to compete with its classmates, we will try to figure out during today’s test drive.
Dimensions and interior of the Staria
The height of the Staria is 199 cm., length is 5.22 m., wheelbase is 3.27 m., width is 2 m., it is slightly shorter than the long version of the VW Multivan and above it, in general, all you need to know is that it is huge. We have a 7-seat version on the test drive.
Hyundai Staria’s equipment is very rich: electric sliding doors on both sides with vents, curtains throughout the cabin and an electric trunk lid. The cabin has separate second-row seats with heating, ventilation, electric adjustment and armrests. But the third row of seats for 3 people does not have all this: only vents, curtains on the windows, cup holders and charging for the phone. It is also worth noting that it is not very convenient to get to the third row of seats: only through a narrow passage between the seats of the second row.
Staria 2021 is a logical continuation of the H1 model, but the approach is completely different: Hyundai H1 was a story about catching up with VW Multivan, and in Staria Koreans decided to go the other way: the bet was made on equipment that largely corresponds to representatives of the top lines of world brands. For the front seats, both heating and ventilation are available, as well as heated steering wheel. There are also wired Carplay and Android Auto, navigation, wireless charging.
The multimedia system in Hyundai Staria 2021 is the same as in Elantra or Tucson: we didn’t have any questions about it — it works fast, the interface is logical and understandable.
The BOSE audio system did not impress us with its sound.
Separately, we want to note the driver’s seat — very ergonomic, very comfortable, visibility is excellent. The image from the rear-view mirrors is duplicated on the dashboard — it’s very cool.
But the trunk of the Staria practically does not. Yes, you can move the third row of seats forward and then, according to the manufacturer, 1300 liters of useful volume will be formed, but we have not fully figured out exactly how to use it.
Engine and dynamics of Staria 2021
Our test copy is equipped with a turbocharged diesel engine with a volume of 2.2 liters. with a capacity of 177 hp and a torque of 430 Nm. We decided to check how much it is enough for such a large and heavy car in two ways: first only with the driver in the cabin, and then with loading all seven seats.
Acceleration with only a driver from 0 to 100 km / h was 12.5 s., a rather mediocre result. And what will happen next?
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h with loading of all seats was 14.2 s. – in principle, what we expected, there are no record figures, it’s just fine.
In the same way, we decided to check the brakes: from 100 to 0 km / h in the first case it took 40 m., and in the second 42 m. – and these are very good results.
The fuel consumption of Hyundai Staria also depends on the degree of loading and in urban mode is 10-11 liters per 100 km., I would like less, but let’s not forget about the weight and dimensions of the car.
Chassis and steering Hyundai Staria 2021
Behind the wheel of the Staria 2021, the first thing you pay attention to is the smoothness of the ride, the whole point is that there is an independent suspension and despite the large body, the car rides surprisingly pleasantly and gently.
There are no complaints about steering in urban mode, it has understandable adequate reactions, there is a clear 0 and it is quite well balanced in terms of effort.
But outside the city at high speed, everything becomes noticeably worse: after 120 km / h, the car starts to prowl and the driver constantly has to adjust the course, and at 150 km / h the driver practically does not control the car.
All of the above can be attributed to noise insulation: in urban mode it is excellent, but on the highway at speeds over 120 km / h it seems to be absent.
The clearance of the Hyundai Staria 2021 is 180 mm. and that’s more than enough.
The Staria is a car with a bright futuristic appearance, with a spacious and comfortable interior, with a suspension and steering comfortable for the city, but, unfortunately, it will not suit fans of active and fast driving due to a weak power unit and poor handling at high speed.
