Opel CEO Michael Loscheller has revealed new details about the next-generation Astra. In an interview with Automotive News Europe, Loscheller confirmed that the car will ride on the EMP2 platform, which also underpins a number of other vehicles, including the Peugeot 308 and 508. This architecture is a great strength of the brand.
While the popularity of station wagons is declining, the new Astra Sports Tourer is coming. Loscheller said little about the model, but his confirmation should reassure fans who want more cabin space but don’t want to buy a crossover.
Astra will be offered with petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains. The novelty will share some of them with the Peugeot 308, which is available with a 1.2-liter petrol engine with 109 and 128 horsepower.
Buyers can also get a 1.5-liter diesel engine with 128 hp output. and 300 Nm of torque. More importantly, the 308 is offered with two plug-in hybrid powertrains. Both have a 1.6-liter engine, an electric motor and a 12.4 kWh battery pack that provides around 60 km of range on electricity alone.
The entry-level variant delivers a combined 148 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque, while the other delivers 178 hp. and the same torque.
