After a decade of broken promises and false hopes, Jeep is bringing back the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. The highly anticipated models will debut next week, March 11.
Jeep says they “will herald the renaissance of an American icon while continuing their legacy as the first modern SUVs.” The company is keeping the details under wraps, but the models were previewed by the Wagoneer concept, which was unveiled last fall. They promise to “build on a rich heritage of premium American craftsmanship, heritage and sophistication, offering new levels of comfort, legendary 4×4 capabilities and customer service.”
While Jeep hasn’t talked much about the models, they’ve confirmed that the 2022 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will be the first vehicles to integrate Amazon Fire TV for Auto. It works like a traditional Fire TV joystick and allows rear passengers to watch streaming video while traveling.
Jeep has also confirmed that the concept’s front passenger screen will be carried over to the production model. The driver’s view of the screen will be blocked by the privacy filter, but he can watch Fire TV content on the Uconnect 5 infotainment system when the car is parked.
There is currently no information on screen sizes, but Jeep notes that content can be downloaded for travel where wireless service is limited. The company also announced that the vehicles will come with a unique remote control that provides access to Alexa at the touch of a button, as well as “a button that connects Fire TV to the new Uconnect 5 system to control vehicle functions such as climate.
Full details will be published next week. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will be based on the same platform that underpins the Ram 1500.
Engine options remain unconfirmed, but they are expected to include a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 305bhp. and 364 Nm. There should also be a 5.7-liter V8 that develops 395 hp. and 556 Nm. Jeep has also confirmed plans for a plug-in hybrid variant, and the models may be offered with a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine that develops 260 hp. and 651 Nm.
