The press service of the South Korean brand has published a teaser for the European version of the 2022 Sportage crossover. The debut of the novelty will take place on September 1st.
Why is KIA publishing teasers for the new Sportage when it unveiled a compact crossover a few months ago? This is because the design sketches depict what will be the first version of the car intended for the European market since that crossover in 1993. The NQ5 version of the fifth generation model for “Old Continent” will look almost the same from the front and back as the global version – only the side profile will be slightly different.
While the International Sportage has a fairly large quarter glass, the crossover shown here has a sportier C-pillar without that part.
Instead, a small fixed glass will be installed in the windows of the rear doors in the same spirit as in the previous version of the model.
KIA is sketching a GT Line trim with a two-tone design and giant wheels, and while not necessarily noticeable, the production car should have shorter rear doors as a result of the reduced wheelbase. For reference, the 2022 Global Sportage is 4,660mm long and 2,755mm wheelbase, so expect its European sibling to be a little shorter, but likely to have the same width and height.
Making it a little more compact should result in minor weight loss, although it won’t be enough to significantly improve fuel economy and performance. By the way, a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the European version of the crossover has been confirmed. It will combine a 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine with a 66.9 kW electric motor and a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.
