KIA began expanding into the Indian market in 2019. The first model on the market was the Seltos crossover, followed by the Sonet subcompact SUV and the previous generation Carnival minivan. The release of all these models has been localized. In 2020, dealers of the brand managed to sell 96,932 Seltos crossovers and took ninth place among all models on the Indian market, Sonet got the 21st line (38,363 units).
Today it became known about the brand rebranding. KIA Motors India has become KIA India and a new model has been announced as part of the online event for the event. The name of the upcoming model is still unknown. The automaker did not show any images of the model, but it was announced that with this car the brand will enter a new segment, with sales starting early next year. Indian media suggests that this is a seven-seater compact van.
Rumors that a new van smaller and cheaper Carnival may appear in the model range of the brand appeared two years ago, and in 2020 it became known that the model received the “green light”. It should also be mentioned that the Indian media published spy shots of a camouflaged vehicle attributed to KIA. The car was spotted in Korea, but there is nothing surprising here, because the brand tests almost all of its models at home.
It is expected that the compact MPV will be unified with the Seltos, but the MPV, of course, will be larger. Most likely, the model will inherit the power units of the crossover. In the Indian market, the Seltos is offered with a 1.5-liter MPI with 115 hp. or diesel CRDi of similar volume and power. Also, the crossover can be equipped with a 1.4-liter 140-horsepower engine, but experts believe that this engine will not appear under the hood of a van.
Serial production of the minivan will be launched in India and it is possible that the model will appear in other markets.
