According to the Automotive News portal, the automaker KIA will stop production of passenger cars, sales of which do not suit the company. The first victim may be the Rio range for the American market. The delivery of the sedan and hatchback may end at the end of this model year.
The KIA Rio version available in North America came with a 120-horsepower 1.6-liter engine paired with a CVT. At the same time, the cost was not much cheaper than the larger KIA Forte model (also known as Cerato). Over the past 10 years, Rio sales in the US have fallen by almost 1.5 times. The model went through the last update last year.
In America, Rio is sold with two body options – a hatchback and a sedan. If KIA ditches the Rio family, the Forte will become the company’s most affordable model in North America. However, such changes were predictable, as the company announced its intention to produce more crossovers and electric vehicles.
KIA Rio for Europe and America is based on the platform of the European i20 hatchback. Rio is assembled for the USA at the company’s Mexican plant. Note that a different platform is used for then versions.
