Lexus has revealed the new RZ 450e in official photos – an electric crossover that shares the e-TNGA architecture with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra. The premium battery-powered off-road vehicle differs from the soplatform vehicles in design: it retained the L-shaped running lights, and instead of the radiator grille it received a cap of the recognizable spindle-shaped shape. The main competitor of the novelty on the market will be the Mercedes-Benz EQC.

Even from the early teasers, it became clear that the 450e will receive unique features by which the crossover can be distinguished from the non-premium Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra. The rear pillars of the electric car are differently made, the roof is crowned with two unusual aerodynamic “fins”, and at the stern there is a taillight stretching across the entire width of the body. At the same time, the charging port for all three electric vehicles is located in the same place.

There are no pictures of the interior yet, as well as official information about the power plant.

For bZ4X and Solterra, two versions are announced, with one and two electric motors on the front and rear axles (in the second case, their total output is 218 horsepower). They are powered by a battery with a capacity of 71.4 kilowatt-hours, which provides a power reserve of 460 kilometers on the WLTC cycle. Earlier it was suggested that the RZ will be technically unified with Toyota and Subaru models, but the 450e index hints at a more powerful power plant. Most likely, already in the base, the crossover will be all-wheel drive and will receive a proprietary Direct4 thrust distribution system.

The full debut of the Lexus RZ 450e is expected during 2022. In addition to the Mercedes-Benz EQC, the new product will compete with the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4 e-tron and Genesis GV60.

According to Lexus’ electrification strategy, by 2030 the brand will have an electric car in each segment, while by the end of the decade the company will sell only electric cars in Europe, North America and China. In another five years, Lexus vehicles with traditional internal combustion engines will disappear from other markets as well.
