Last year, the Chinese company SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile launched a budget electric car Wuling Hongguang Mini EV on the local market. The compact model was so warmly received by the residents that by now it has received the status of a “people’s” electric car, overtaking the Tesla Model 3 in sales.

First of all, Wuling Hongguang Mini EV came to the liking of residents of small Chinese cities. The creators are positioning their electric car as a “people’s” vehicle for commuting from home to work. With its compact size – less than three meters in length and one and a half meters in width – the electric car can accommodate four people.

The cost of the basic version of the model is 28,800 yuan (approximately $ 4,400 at the current exchange rate). However, the most popular among locals is the air-conditioned version, which can be purchased for 33,000 yuan (approximately $ 5,100 at current exchange rates).

The initial Hongguang MINI EV is capable of traveling 120 kilometers on a single charge. At the same time, the maximum speed of the electric car is limited to 100 kilometers per hour. The locals found these characteristics sufficient for daily use. In addition, one of the advantages of the model is the ability to charge it from a regular household outlet.

Last year, 119,000 units of the Hongguang MINI EV were sold in China – this is the second most popular electric car in the world after the Tesla Model 3 (365,000). Meanwhile, already in January of this year, according to the Chinese Association of Passenger Cars, the inhabitants of the Middle Kingdom purchased 25,778 budget electric cars against 13,843 cars of the American brand.

Thus, the “people’s” Hongguang MINI EV has every chance of becoming a bestseller not only in the local, but also in the world market. True, it is still possible to buy an electric car only in China. In Europe, the model will appear later, but under the name FreZe Nikrob EV.

Last November, the Chinese firm BYD and the world’s largest taxi aggregator DiDi released the perfect car for taxi drivers and short-term rental services. The BYD D1 electric car is designed for commercial use and the convenience of boarding and disembarking passengers.
