The up-and-coming electric car maker Polestar, created by Geely and Volvo on the basis of the Swedish brand’s court tuner, considers Porsche to be its main competitor. Such a bold statement was made by the CEO of the company Thomas Ingenlath in an interview with the German edition of Auto Motor und Sport.
According to the top manager, his company intends to compete with Porsche in creating the best premium sports car. At the same time, at the moment, the brand has only two products in the arsenal – the small-scale plug-in hybrid coupe Polestar 1, which will soon be discontinued, and the Polestar 2 battery liftback, which can be called a rival to the Tesla Model 3 sedan. All cars are made in China.
However, in five years, the Polestar product line will already include four or five models, and they will be produced not only in the Middle Kingdom, but also at the American Volvo plant in South Carolina, and, possibly, at one of the European enterprises.
Polestar has already unveiled some plans last month ahead of its initial public offering. So, in 2022, a large SUV Polestar 3 will be released – technically close to the next Volvo XC90, but with an original design, a more powerful power plant and a price tag of around 75 thousand euros. This is exactly what they are going to produce in the States.
It will be followed by a more compact cross-coupe Polestar 4 costing from 45 thousand euros. Like the previous model, it will be built on the SPA2 platform, that is, a modernized version of the “bogie” that underlies the current sixtieth and ninetieth series Volvo. Finally, in 2024, there will be Polestar 5, a sedan inspired by last year’s Precept concept.
