NYPD will switch to Tesla

New York authorities intend to spend $ 12.4 million on the purchase of new Tesla Model 3 vehicles, which will add to the fleet of police and other city services. Electrek reports on the upcoming major contract between the largest city in the United States and the manufacturer of electric cars.

Public hearings – a procedure required for procurement by authorities – on the purchase of electric vehicles will take place next Thursday, December 16. The number of cars in the contract has not yet been named, but the publication suggests that this amount can be spent on about 200-300 Tesla Model 3 cars, depending on the configuration.

Earlier, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has already received the first Tesla Model 3 electric cars, on which some of the road patrol crews were transferred. The vehicles received all the necessary special equipment – from the branded blue and white livery and flashing beacons to a radio station and a computer with access to police databases.

New York has adopted the experience of law enforcement officers from the city of Bargersville, Indiana, who have been using electric cars for the past several years. The local police believed that the department saves up to $ 6 thousand annually on maintenance and the absence of the need to buy fuel for each electric car.
