Only rudders: Tesla will block access to video games while driving

Tesla will block drivers from using Passenger Play while driving, the Associated Press told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The company will release updated software, after the installation of which it will be impossible to launch games while the car is moving. The move came the day after NHTSA announced it was launching an official investigation into distracted driving related to Tesla video games, some of which can be played while the car is moving.

The update will affect about 580 thousand cars – Tesla Model S, X, Y and 3 from 2017 to 2022 model years. It will be possible to play on the touchscreen of the car only if it is standing.

Formally, Tesla still prohibits the driver from playing, but the restriction is conditional: before starting the game, a warning appears that only passengers can play while the car is moving. To do this, you need to press the button confirming that the player is a passenger. However, nothing prevents the driver from doing the same.

NHTSA previously stated that distraction from the driving process is one of the causes of deaths on the country’s roads. In 2019 alone, 3142 people died in the United States due to the carelessness of drivers.
