Peugeot 308 received the award “European car of the year 2014” shortly after production began, so the next generation has to surpass its predecessor.
With such innovations as the Volkswagen Golf, Renault Megane and Ford Focus, French automaker will have to take a lot more than ever, especially when it comes to developing the next generation of its compact car, and it seems that they are willing to change a lot.
First and foremost, the next 308 will receive a plug-in hybrid powertrain that confirmed the General Director Jean-Philippe Imparato, who acknowledged that there is the option of a rechargeable battery, which, even if you get the “green light” will appear later.
“Yes, it will be on the platform EMP2. At first it will be hybrid and plug-in, but maybe later he will have fully electric transmission. Our compact and midsize cars will have a hybrid setup with the plug-in, because it’s more seamless way to switch from internal combustion engines to electric,” said Imparato.
Peugeot could become a trendsetter in the PSA group in the segment of compact hatchbacks, as they have to follow sister brands Citroen and Opel / Vauxhall with the same versions of cars that, according to preliminary information, will be produced, respectively called the C4 and Astra. These three cars will use the same platform, technology and most powertrains, so it is highly likely that we will see PHEV and EV versions of all these models.
