The British company Swindon Powertrain has submitted “boxed” electric propulsion system, designed to replace the traditional internal combustion engine. The decision focused on niche manufacturers.

“The drive out of the box” Swindon Powertrain developed in cooperation with a manufacturer of electric motors iNetic, the firm Code and the Association of niche brands Niche Vehicle Network. The set consists of a motor (109 HP), inverter, single-stage reducer and the module of the cooling system. Their total mass is 70 kilograms.

“Boxed” variant of the power plant does not include the traction battery and the charging system and power management. Their customers have to buy separately. The electric motor and the power electronics are protected from moisture and can be used in the composition of the hybrid drive. Serial production of these installations will begin in June 2020.

In 2018 at the SEMA show the Mopar division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) presented a “boxed” engine Hellephant. This 7.0-liter unit with an all-aluminum block, power unit and parts from the motor Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, which gives 1014 horsepower and 1288 Nm of torque. Hellephant is intended for installation in passenger cars and utility vehicles manufactured up to 1976.
