The new Audi R8 is not a sign that the brand Audi wants to give up a full drive Quattro. German manufacturer in 2016 changed the name of his unit with the Audi Quattro for Audi Sport to offer the best sports model. It was assumed that the changes will pave the way for the front-wheel and rear-wheel drive model variants RS.
However, Rolf Michl, head of sales and marketing at Audi Sport, said that all-wheel drive system remains a priority for the company as it provides high maneuverability and safety.
“We used a rear-wheel drive in the latest version of the R8. But usually the Quattro is part of our heritage. This means safe, agile and competitive driving. I don’t hear any different opinions. We stick to our approach: the Quattro is the main part of the RS models,” said he.
However, Rolf Michl said that the model Audi R8 is one of the most important vehicles in the portfolio of the German brand, adding that it’s a real “brand shaper”.
“Audi Sport is committed to the R8, and we do everything to get a concept for the future. The R8 has much in common with a race car that needs to meet future expectations and, therefore, is a complex decision,” said Mehl.
Head of Audi Sport Oliver Hoffmann has previously confirmed that the car is the R8 of the next generation will be electrified, but have yet to make a decision that it will be hybrid or fully electric.
