The appearance of the Hyundai Kona N crossover has ceased to be a secret after recent teasers. Now the Koreans have shared important technical information. For example, the 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo engine will develop the same 280 hp as the Hyundai i30 N performance hot hatch. But if the “thirty” is equipped with two types of gearboxes to choose from, then for the “charged” Kona there is only one transmission – an eight-speed robotized one with two wet clutches.
In terms of efficiency, the supercharged “four” of the Kona N is inferior to the unit that is installed on the Volkswagen T-Roc R crossover. The Korean model has 280 forces and 392 Nm in its assets, and the German model has 300 hp. and 400 newton meters.
The preselective gearbox, which has an honest manual mode, has undergone serious tests. During the development phase, Hyundai specialists drove about 1,350 laps on the Nordschleife.
The proprietary gearbox is not new. It is equipped not only with the i30 N, but also with the Veloster N, as well as more mundane models – diesel family crossovers Hyundai Santa Fe and KIA Sorento. The design uses two electric oil pumps, one responsible for cooling the clutches and lubricating the gears, and the other for maintaining pressure in the system. There are three modes of operation for the “robot” – standard N Power Shift, track N Track Sense Shift and the most aggressive N Grin Shift. The latter algorithm promises fast percussion switches, but it is activated only for 20 seconds, and between switching on you need to make a 40-second pause.
Does such a car need a manual transmission?
