Renault Captur – watch out for the pits!


Today we will test the Renault Captur of the second generation — this class of cars is very popular now and the manufacturer has great hopes for it, because with the Captur model in the Renault car line, a full-fledged European crossover begins, which has every chance to become a hit of sales. And that’s exactly what Captur is going to conquer the market with, and we will figure it out.

Dimensions and appearance of Captur

According to the European classification Renault Captur 2021 is a K1 class in which there are quite a lot of competitors and because of the increased competition Renault decided to refresh the appearance of the Captur a little, but they did it very carefully. The French did not dare to completely change their appearance beyond recognition, so the continuity of the design is felt immediately, although it has become prettier from all angles. The front optics are now completely different and it is made in the spirit of modern European Renault, but the rear is unfamiliar at all, but now it is the brand’s corporate identity.

Renault Captur base increased by 30 mm, length by 110 mm. and a width of 20 mm. And this is noticeable: the car now looks more proportional, slightly stretched and completely organic, and the clearance here is as much as 150 mm. which is quite enough if you do not go on serious off-road.

Renault Captur 2021 Engine and dynamics

We have a Captur on test with a 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine (H5HT) with a volume of 1.3 liters. with a power of 130 hp and a torque of 240 Nm. This engine has already been installed on some Mercedes models, whose owners noted increased oil consumption. We also want to draw attention to such a design feature as the absence of hydraulic compensators and high-pressure fuel injectors, which are demanding on fuel quality.

The Getrag 7-EDC robotic gearbox is paired with the engine and with it, according to the manufacturer, the Renault Captur 2021 should accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 10 seconds. Let’s check it out.

Having measured acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h, we got 9.9. s. – quite a good result.

Both in urban mode and on the highway, the torque, the maximum value of which is already available from 2000 rpm, is more than enough, there is a reserve of dynamics under the gas pedal and, if necessary, you can quickly accelerate.

Renault Captur Interior

The salon in Captur did not impress us with anything: it was very simple, gray and boring, and such a car, in our opinion, should be bright and emotional. The plastic of the torpedo is soft and pleasant to the touch, the plastic of the door cards and the center console is hard and squeaky.

The driver’s seat is comfortable and ergonomic: there are enough steering wheel and seat adjustments, it will be convenient even for a tall driver, the ceiling does not press, the left rack does not interfere.

The multimedia system has been updated, but we have questions about its speed, smoothness, interface and design. I also didn’t like the image of the rear-view camera. Among the advantages: the system supports Car Play and Android Auto, as well as a new convenient joystick for controlling the multimedia system.

There is more space in the back row of seats due to the elongated base, but it is still not enough.

The trunk in the Renault Captur 422 l. but at first it seemed much smaller to us, then we found an additional niche under the floor, removed the partition, moved the rear row of seats forward and then the amount of free space became much larger. Separately, we want to note the materials of the trunk trim, they are of decent quality.

The noise insulation of the Renault Captur 2021 is not sufficient and at a speed of 110 km/h the wind noise is clearly audible in the cabin.

Steering and suspension Captur

The handling of the Captur can even be called good, the steering wheel is sharp enough and it’s nice to drive a car in the city, but the feeling is spoiled by the rolling suspension and large rolls are felt in turns. While the asphalt is good, there are no problems, but as soon as there is even a small transverse wave in the turn, then immediately the rear axle begins to demolish.
According to the energy intensity of the suspension, questions also arise, the Renault Captur pits are tough, and sometimes with bumps.

Having measured the braking distance from 100 to 0 km / h, we got 41 m., yes, I would also like the brakes to be better. We think the problem is that drum brakes are installed on the rear axle.
Compared to the previous version, the Renault Captur 2021 has grown a lot and improved ergonomically, it has a really good engine, especially against the background of the general tendency to reduce the number of cylinders, there are still four of them here, the box has been brought to mind and the only thing that upsets is not quite clear suspension.
