American startup Rivian, which introduced the R1T electric pickup truck and the R1S platform SUV at the end of 2018, has patented new names for future models in the US: R3T, R3S, R4T, R4S, R5T and R5S.
As you can see, variants with the number “2” are missing in the list, but the point is that R2T and R2S were registered a couple of years ago, along with such indices as R1C, R1A, R1V, R2C, R2A, R2X and R2R.
Earlier, the head of the company RJ Schering promised to release six new models in the near future, as well as find a place for the construction of a second plant in the United States. It’s worth noting that, for example, the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV are considered different models, although technically they are the same car, just with different rear ends. So, having released three more SUVs and three pickups based on them, Rivian will already make six new models.
No announcements have been made as to which machines will be given new names. We can only assume that, firstly, not all patented names will be immediately used, and secondly, that a startup is unlikely to have models larger than R1T and R1S, since the latter are already very large. It is more logical that the brand will develop towards more compact and affordable electric vehicles.
