Rivian SUVs stood on the conveyor

Recall that the young American brand Rivian solemnly launched the mass production of electric cars on September 14, 2021. The Rivian R1T pickup truck was the first to enter the assembly line of the plant in Normal, Illinois. Cars of the first production were distributed among the company’s employees so that minor bugs could be quickly identified and eliminated, but by the end of autumn, sales began to “ordinary” customers. And in mid-December, the production of related SUVs Rivian R1S started. The first two copies were handed over to the CEO and CFO of the Rivian brand, and soon the passenger cars will go to the retail network.

As of December 15, 652 Rivian serial electric cars left the assembly line of the plant, and 386 cars were delivered to customers. The pace of production picks up as assembly technology matures, and a significant jump in output is scheduled for the first quarter of next year, for which Rivian plans to hire 800-1000 additional workers by the second quarter.

In total, the Rivian brand has collected 71 thousand prepaid orders for its electric cars in the USA and Canada. Most customers chose cars in the rich version of the Adventure Package (such a pickup starts at $ 73,000), but only 20% of customers decided to pay $ 10,000 for an enlarged Max Pack battery (180 kWh instead of the base 135 kWh). However, so far only cars with a standard battery are leaving the assembly line of the plant, and the Max Pack version will appear by the summer.

At the same time, the Rivian company unveiled a plan for the construction of the second enterprise. It will be located in the state of Georgia, investment in the project will amount to $ 5 billion, staff – 7.5 thousand people, and the planned capacity – 400 thousand cars per year. Construction of the plant is to begin next summer, with a launch scheduled for 2024.
