Mercedes-Benz and its Chinese partner Geely are preparing for the premiere of a concept prototype of the future electric crossover smart, according to Autocar. The novelty will be based on a platform developed by Geely, and on one charge the electric cross will be able to travel up to 500 kilometers.
The fact that Geely and Mercedes-Benz are organizing a joint production of smart electric cars for the Chinese and German markets became known back in 2020. At the same time, it was reported that each of the partners will invest 2.7 billion yuan (almost $ 389 million) in a joint venture, and a full-fledged production of electric smart will be launched in 2022.
Now the project is acquiring new details. The concept, which will be a harbinger of the future smart B-class crossover, will be presented at an exhibition in Munich on September 7-12, 2021. It will be based on the Pure electric Modular Architecture, a name previously used for the Geely SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform for electric cars.
According to preliminary data, the power plant of the smart electric cross will be 272 horsepower, it will be powered by a 70 kilowatt-hour battery, on a single charge the electric car will be able to drive 500 kilometers in the NEDC cycle.
The novelty will become the largest Smart in the entire history of the brand – its length will be more than four meters. In terms of dimensions, the serial five-seater crossover can be compared to the MINI Countryman.
As for the current smart models, until 2022 Mercedes-Benz will continue to produce EQ ForTwo and EQ ForFour at European factories in France and Slovenia. After 2022, the production of electric vehicles of the EQ line will be organized at the facilities of the French enterprise in the city of Ambach.
