Hyundai Sonata of the current generation will remain without restyling in the middle of its life cycle. Allegedly, the Koreans refused to update the model due to low sales: in the home market, the Sonata is less in demand than the more expensive Grandeur, and even than the KIA K5. For this reason, the sedan will be produced in its current form until 2023, until it changes its generation. This runs counter to Hyundai’s recent announcement that a facelift is scheduled for 2022.
According to The Korea Times, in July Hyundai sold 32,883 vehicles on the South Korean market, 3,712 of which are Sonata sedans. For comparison, the larger and more expensive Grandeur sold 5247 units during the same period, and Sonata’s main competitor, KIA K5 (formerly Optima), finished the second month of summer with 5777 units sold. Due to such low indicators, Sonata decided to leave it without restyling, the media write.
According to other sources, Sonata will still be updated in 2022: Hyundai representatives announced this during a meeting with investors in May this year. Then it was reported that the restyling of the sedan will be carried out simultaneously with the modernization of the large Palisade crossover.
