The Internet favorite small SUV, the Suzuki Jimny, is already offered in several variants depending on the market. Long wheelbase Jimny is coming soon. These spy shots make it possible to see it before its debut screening.
Except for the increased distance between the front and rear axles, the prototype looks much the same as the shorter Jimny configurations, with a rear-mounted spare wheel similar to the Mercedes G-Class. Interestingly, it still only has two doors, although we hear that a more practical 4-door body is on the agenda to make it easier for rear passengers to get on and off. Needless to say, the long wheelbase configuration will pay dividends in terms of rear legroom and provide more cargo space.
A more pressing issue is Jimny’s status in Europe, because in 2020 Suzuki was forced to convert the current model into a two-seater commercial vehicle in order to achieve average CO2 emissions for the company’s fleet. Jimny’s recognition as a commercial vehicle means that it is subject to a much less stringent EU vehicle fleet average of 147 g / km, rather than 95 g / km for passenger cars.
In an ideal scenario, the Jimny LWB would have a more efficient engine than the 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with its measly 100 horsepower on offer today. A more fuel efficient engine, with hybridisation and turbo aids, would bring back a passenger version.
Suzuki is expected to unveil an enhanced Jimny later this year, when a 4-door derivative could also join the lineup. The rear door version will be assembled in India using kits imported from Japan.
