This year, the Tesla Model 3 sedan, which is built by Tesla in Fremont, California, was ranked # 1 on the Cars.com American-Made Index.
This ranking, for 16 years now, evaluates American-made cars and determines which of them are the most American ones.
When evaluating vehicles, five main factors are taken into account: place of final assembly, origin of parts, origin of engines, origin of transmissions and labor force.
Ford Mustang, produced in Flat Rock, Michigan, finished second, and the Tesla Model Y SUV closes the top three.
Recently, Ford and Tesla have entered into increasingly close competition. The hugely successful Ford Mustang Mach-E has challenged Tesla to win electric car buyers. Ford’s first all-electric Mustang, launched earlier this year, made quite a splash and immediately cut Tesla’s share of the American electric vehicle market by more than 10 percent.
