Tesla has reduced the equipment of Chinese-assembled Model 3 and Model Y electric cars. According to CNBC, citing sources close to the manufacturer, the cars were deprived of an additional electronic control unit in the steering mechanism in order to save scarce components. Despite the fact that tens of thousands of cars left the assembly line of the plant in China in this form, the company decided to do without public statements.
According to insiders, the absence of the unit should not affect the operation of the steering mechanism and safety, since it was additional and, in fact, was installed on electric vehicles as a backup. At the same time, the measure will allow Tesla not only to spend less chips on the production of cars, which have been in short supply for the second year already, but also save money.
Tesla’s current Level 2 “autopilot” will also continue to function without the part, the sources added. However, this can no longer be said about a more advanced version of the system, which will belong to the third level. It was previously reported that the corresponding Full Self-Driving (FSD) update could be installed over the Over The Air (OTA) wireless connection, but Tesla owners with reduced equipment may still have to bring electric cars to a service center.
It is noted that tens of thousands of vehicles manufactured by the Chinese Gigafactory are sent to customers both in China and in the UK, Germany and other European countries, as well as in Australia.
