Tesla managed to collect more than a million battery cells type 4680

In the fall of 2020, Tesla showed the 4680 battery cells developed together with Panasonic, which, solely due to layout changes, promised to reduce the cost of charge storage and increase the specific capacity. In California, Tesla’s experimental line has already produced more than a million of these battery cells.

Tesla spoke about overcoming the symbolic milestone in January of this year on its Twitter page just this week. It was reported that the production of such batteries will eventually be deployed not only at the plant in Texas, but also in the vicinity of Berlin, and the Model Y crossovers that are equipped with them will roll off both conveyors in 2022. In fact, development batches of cars have already been spotted in the parking lot near the Austin plant, next to which the company’s new headquarters is located.

Despite its status as an experimental line, the site in California can produce batteries with a total capacity of up to 10 GWh, but the Austin and Berlin plants will still provide the main volumes over time. At the quarterly reporting event, Tesla representatives said that this year the volume of production of 4680 batteries will not be a limiting factor for it, and the lack of semiconductor components will have a much greater impact on the pace of development of the production of electric cars.

Panasonic also plans to mass-produce 4680 batteries next year, but not only Tesla will supply them. The Korean LG Energy Solution also wants to get similar battery cells, but Samsung SDI has created its own analogue with slightly different characteristics.
