The crossover received top marks in crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, as well as high marks for headlights and collision avoidance.
The Tesla Model Y electric crossover has been named best in its class by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and earned a Top Safety Pick + rating. This is the second Tesla model to receive the highest score.
Previously, the only Tesla electric car with TSP + status was the 2019-2020 Model 3. This year, around 80 new vehicles from 2021 and 2022 were rated TSP +.
To qualify for the TSP + list, a vehicle must score well on six crash tests and an Advanced or Superior rating for front collision avoidance. It should also have high-rated headlights.
IIHS has tested several 2021 Model Y electric vehicles in six different crash tests to give its rating. After a crash test with a small front overlap, the engineers found that the position of the crash test dummy on the driver’s seat indicated that “the driver’s survival space was very well maintained.” The IIHS also reported that the front and side curtain airbags “worked well together to keep the head away from any rigid structure or foreign objects that could cause injury,” and that “the driver’s space was kept in good condition and the risk of leg injuries the feet of the mannequin were low. ”
