As you remember, at the end of 2020, Tesla set an absolute sales record, having sold 180 thousand electric vehicles in the last three months, and thus almost reaching the target of 500 thousand cars a year. At the same time, at the beginning of the year, the company has traditionally observed a slight decline, so no one expected Tesla to repeat the record in the first quarter. But in vain.
According to the results of the first three months of 2021, the company sold 185 thousand electric vehicles and produced 180 thousand cars. Success predetermined the growth of production at the Shanghai automobile plant.
The company emphasized the high interest in the restyled S and X models, but admitted that none of these cars had been delivered yet. But the clients received two thousand pre-styling cars. Thus, out of 185 thousand, about 183 were only for the Tesla Model 3 sedan and the Model Y electric crossover.
For comparison, in the first quarter of 2020, Tesla sold only 88 thousand cars. Thus, sales growth compared to last year amounted to 110%. Taking into account the imminent start of production of the restyled S and X models, one can expect that the quarterly sales will easily exceed 200 thousand units.
The expansion of production capacity in Shanghai will continue until the end of the year. In addition, a factory under construction near Berlin will start working in the summer. Thus, we can expect that the current record will be broken more than once before the end of the year.
