The press service of the Bavarian brand presented photos of the very first copy of the 2 Series 2022 coupe model year. The car was assembled at the automaker’s plant in Mexico.
The second generation BMW 2 Series Coupe debuted in July as the latest member of the compact G42 2 Series family. More importantly, serial production of the new item has already started at the BMW plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
It should be noted that the BMW 2 Series for the global market will be produced exclusively in this plant, unlike the previous generation of the model, which was produced at the BMW plant in Leipzig in Germany.
The automaker has received an additional $ 125 million investment in a Mexican plant to manufacture the new 2 Series Coupe.
“Two years after starting operations, our plant is integrating a new model into its production line. This is made possible by the immense talent of the team in San Luis Potosi. We are proud to be able to assemble this vehicle exclusively in Mexico for the whole world.” – said Harald Gotche, President and CEO of the BMW Group plant in San Luis Potosi.
Additional investments were made to modernize the Mexican plant – to expand the existing capacity and additional equipment required for the production of the BMW 2 Series Coupe version of the 2022 model year.
In particular, 82 new robots were installed in the body shop, and existing robots were reprogrammed as needed. The assembly personnel have also been trained to work with the shorter two-door coupe, which requires a different approach to those already on the production line.
The plant’s paint shop has also been updated by BMW Materials Analysis to produce two new specific colors for the 2 Series Coupé, namely Brooklyn Gray and Thundernight Metallic.
